Watchdog limits access to Tor website after court’s 2017 decision

MOSCOW, Dec 8 (PRIME) -- The Russian communications service has restricted access to the Tor browser website following a 2017 court decision, the watchdog said in its register on Wednesday.

“The reason was release of information backing operations of the devices that give access to illegal content on the website. Access has been restricted today,” a watchdog official told PRIME.

According to the register, the decision was made by the Saratov District Court in December 2017.

“Russia is second in the world by the number of Tor users, more than 300,000 a day, or 15% of all users,” Tor said.

Tor is a software program, a system of proxy servers allowing users to have a safe anonymous network connection. The resource said on Tuesday that some Internet providers in the country have been blocking access to it since December 1.

Later it said that after the publication of this information, access was limited in the country.
